Law students gain insights into working as an in-house lawyer at Sky Legal
intro
Twenty-five Law students at the University of West London recently attended a Legal Insights Day at media and entertainment company Sky’s offices in Isleworth. The students, who were accompanied by Head of the School of Law Philip Ells and Senior Lecturer Karen Shury, heard from the Sky Legal Team about working as an in-house lawyer.

Sky Senior Counsel Clare Worthing welcomed the students and introduced Sky Legal, explaining the organisation and structure of the team.
The students then split into small groups and had the chance to meet with a legal team member and consider a case study. They discussed the legal issues involved and how to tackle them and prepared a presentation on the case. It was a chance to better understand how the legal teams work and the kinds of issues they deal with.
After lunch, two trainee lawyers gave a presentation on their life at Sky, their career journeys and offered helpful advice for students early in their careers.
Legal team members specialising in editorial, sports law, ethics and compliance and content law shared insights with the students about their roles and journey to Sky. Members of the team were then available for speed networking where students had the chance to ask them questions.
The lawyers who worked on Sky Glass – a smart TV with Sky built in – gave a presentation about the work they did to bring it to life.
The students were also given the opportunity to record themselves presenting Sky Sports, which of course is usually done by A-list names from the world of sports broadcasting.
The day was well organised and informative. The students are now much better informed about a career as an in-house lawyer,"
says Senior Lecturer Karen Shury.
It was amazing to network with the Sky team and find out about so many aspects of law,”
comments student Shrushti Nileshkumar Chhag.
The information that Sky shared was so helpful as I think about my future career. I gained so much knowledge from the lawyers I interacted with,”
adds student Naje Hanley.
