Students go Gold in first UNICEF success

Introduction

Going even further to support new mothers in all areas of infant feeding and caring for their babies, University of West London (UWL) midwifery students have become the first to maintain their UNICEF gold award for care.

UWL is now the only UK university to be reaccredited with Gold standard in UNICEF’s Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) as it helps hundreds more midwifery students transform the future of infant feeding support.

The scheme’s Baby Friendly Standards were developed to ensure new parents have access to support and guidance on their feeding options, following evidence based ‘baby friendly principles’ to promote infant and maternal wellbeing, and working with public services to improve standards of care and support decision making.

BMidwifery (Hons) students have not only demonstrated their knowledge and care around nurturing positive infant mother relationships, and supporting breastfeeding, but have shown how they can successfully promote open communication with new parents, and empower them to succeed with all aspects of breast and bottle feeding.

Charmagne Barnes, Executive Dean of CNMH, said:

This accreditation shows that yet again, our teaching is at the forefront of healthcare, being inclusive and supportive in providing positivity and support to parents however they choose to feed their newborns.

To show kindness and care alongside excellent clinical knowledge is what makes an excellent midwife, and this award only proves that our students have exactly what it takes as they embark on their careers.
