UWL and Wizz Air hold first ‘Ideas Lab’

Intro

Head of Ancillary Services for Wizz Air James Goodwin, who is also a UWL alumnus, teamed up with the University’s BSc (Hons) Air Transport Management (Airline and Airport Specialist) students to hold an ideas session – Wizz Air Lab – at UWL’s St Mary’s Road campus on 14 March.

This event is a collaboration between Wizz Air and UWL’s London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism’s aviation team, as Ash Mistry, who is Course Leader for Air Transport Management, explains:

James is keen to get involved with UWL and support its students. He asked students to come up with creative ideas for extra services that can generate revenue for the airline and pitch them to him and his team.”

The exercise is a great way to get students engaged in thinking about what would work for the industry and also gives Wizz Air access to fresh perspectives. Ash invited them to submit their ideas and Wizz Air then produced a shortlist of five students - Thulasy, Imane, Marcell, Lidia and Mostafa - who they wanted to pitch to them on the day.

James and his colleagues - Product Portfolio Managers Dora Farkas and Alexa Weber - were impressed by the high standard of the presentations, with the winning idea coming from Lidia, who is in her second year of Air Transport Management.

The Wizz Air Lab will now become an annual event, and participation will now be linked to course modules on ancillary revenues and customer experience, encouraging all students to think creatively about boosting low-cost airline revenues.

Ash says:

This is a really important area for airlines like Wizz and this first event acted as a prototype. In future, it could be opened up to other universities alongside UWL and it is exciting to think that the airline may even decide to take one of the student ideas forward.”
