Little Simz – a former UWL student – has won the 2022 Mercury Prize for her fourth album, 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert'. The award, given to the best British or Irish album of the year, comes with a cash prize of £25,000. Simz performed her song 'How Did You Get Here' on the night to a live BBC4 TV audience from London’s Eventim Apollo.
The rapper, whose real name is Simbiatu Ajikawo, studied Music Management at UWL’s London College of Music (LCM) before her career took off, and also won best new artist at the Brit Awards in February this year.
Known as a ‘DIY’ artist as she self-releases her music on her own label, Little Simz released her debut mixtape in 2010. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was her first release to place in the UK albums chart – reaching No 4 – making her eligible for the Brit Awards for the first time.
This is her second Mercury Prize nomination, having been previously nominated for her 2019 album Grey Area, for which she won an Ivor Novello songwriting award.

I would very much like to congratulate Little Simz on her stellar achievements to date,” Professor Anthony Woodman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UWL, commented on the win.
“As a university we are very proud of everything she has achieved and delighted to have played a part in her career development. I am sure we will all continue to root for her and follow her career as she builds on this amazing success.”
Established over 130 years ago, the London College of Music (LCM) is one of the leading music and performing arts institutions in the UK.
LCM’s Music Management courses are intended to develop an interest in leadership, musicianship, and artist development, offering students the opportunity to gain the skills required to take on a career and make your mark in the music industry.
