UWL researchers publish paper on robotic systems

Intro

A research team from the University of West London’s School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) has had their robotics paper “An Interface Platform for Robotic Neuromorphic Systems”, published in the international, peer-reviewed, journal Chips Journal. The team was led by Professor Konstantin Nikolic, who is a Professor in Computer Science – AI, Machine Learning (ML) and Data Management in SCE.

Main body

The first author of the paper is UWL PhD student Nicola Russo, who wrote it along with her SCE colleagues Dr Thomas Madsen and Dr Eugenio Donati. The team also collaborated with Imperial College London on the project. 

SCE has a strong research programme in robotics and has recently been approached by British Telecom to develop a short course on the topic for them. 

Nicola explains:

The paper presents the design and implementation of a cutting-edge interface board and communication protocol.The result is a highly efficient and powerful robotic platform, operating on bio-inspired principles which we refer to as ’neuromorphic’. Thanks to its low power consumption, it is a portable, battery-powered system.” 

The system was put to the test by creating a robotic goalkeeper capable of seeing an incoming table tennis ball, which uses a robotic arm to intercept it. The decision on where to position the goalkeeper is made by a pre-trained artificial neural network. The touch sensor provides feedback on the success of each interception, to improve its performance through self-learning.
