UWL student praised by video game giant SEGA

Introduction

University of West London (UWL) Computer Science student Husna Gul has been recognised by the multinational video game developer and publisher SEGA.

Husna, now in her second year of BSc (Hons) Computer Science, has been awarded the 'SEGA 1st Year Female Student Prize' for her outstanding academic performance at UWL in 2017/18.  She was presented with the prize by Nicky Ormrod, General Counsel, and Stuart Wright, Chief Technology Officer at SEGA Europe.

After the presentation, she was given a tour around SEGA's offices and had a chance to chat and get inspiration from some of the female employees who have risen through the ranks at SEGA.

Husna said:

It was an honour  to receive this award from Sega. This goes to show that hard work pays off in the end. I am grateful for Sega and my university for giving me this opportunity to visit the headquarters. Visiting Sega allowed me to understand more about different career paths available in technology and motivated me to look for an internship to see what sector within technology will suit me best.

Professor Amir Alani, Executive Dean of the School of Computing and Engineering, said:

Congratulations to Husna - this is a great testament to the talent of our students. We are committed to deliver first-class teaching for our students, preparing them for jobs at the forefront of modern technology. This is why we work closely with employers to inform our teaching and provide our graduates with the skills employers are looking for.

SEGA launched the award to encourage more female students to apply for computing courses and to promote women in tech.

This is not the first time UWL students have been spotted by SEGA. In 2017,  Simona Valentaite won the SEGA Prize for Best Female Computing Student after gaining first class marks in all of her first year subjects, which placed her at the top of her course and in the top five of the entire first year undergraduate cohort.

According to the Guardian University Guide 2019, UWL are ranked 2nd in London and 21st in the UK for our Computer Science courses and the University overall was ranked as a top 50 UK university for graduate employment.
