summary

The sustainable civil and structural engineering research group is supported by a number of laboratories for physical and mathematical modelling. These include Concrete Testing Laboratory, Geotechnical Laboratory, Structural Laboratory and Hydraulic laboratory.

Concrete Testing Laboratory

Concrete lab

This newly acquired laboratory is equipped to provide an extensive range of concrete testing, including compressive strength of concrete as well as bricks and blocks. Other testing includes concrete flexural testing and mortar mix proportions and mortar assessment.

Geotechnical Laboratory

Research developed by the Geotechnics team at UWL covers a wide range of areas, including laboratory testing at the micro and macro scales, soil structure analysis, stress distribution in soil and potential of biopolymers in soil stabilization. Research into unsaturated soil's behaviour, particularly focusing on thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of soils highly relevant in verifying the sustainability of the infrastructure in a changing climate.

Structural Laboratory

We are able to test large structural sections in reinforced concrete, steel or composite construction.

Hydraulics Laboratory

The hydraulics laboratory provides an environment for hydraulic modelling activities, including experimental tests and analytical modelling through physically-based models and numerical/conceptual models in water systems.

The lab contains multiple items of hydraulic apparatus used at various levels of undergraduate and postgraduate Civil Engineering courses.
