Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Public Involvement
Course Leader for PGDip Nursing (Adult, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Nursing)
College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare

Over the past 13 years, my journey as a Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse has been a rich tapestry of experiences, challenges and personal growth. As a learning disabilities nurse, I have worked with people with complex needs and those with learning disabilities and mental health diagnoses. I have also worked with people with neurodisabilities. Each setting taught me the significance of adaptability and the importance of teamwork in delivering high-quality patient care. Often working under intense pressure, I have developed my resilience and problem-solving abilities.

Three years into my career, I started working in academia alongside practice. Taking on a full-time post in 2017, I've excelled in academia. My journey as an educator has been a fulfilling one as it has allowed me to blend my clinical expertise with my desire to instil knowledge and wisdom in others.

Being a senior lecturer for the past five years has given me a sense of responsibility, personal tutoring and course leadership which has all been both challenging and rewarding. I have taken pride in innovating teaching methods such as public involvement and making the learning experience engaging and effective. Achieving Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) status further validated the commitment I have for education. It has opened doors to even more opportunities for professional development and network building.

The role of a staff mentor has allowed me to give back to my colleagues. Being a mentor, I've witnessed the growth of my colleagues and have had the privilege of helping them navigate the complexities of the academic world. My involvement in research teams and publications has broadened my horizons and contributed to the ever-evolving body of knowledge in nursing and education.

Looking forward, I am excited to continue my journey, always with a focus on growth and making a positive impact. I see opportunities to merge my teaching and research expertise to further enhance nursing education and contribute to evidence-based practice. I have a research interest in civic/community engagement.
