Professor Kitrina Douglas

Professor of Narrative and Performative Research
School of Human and Social Sciences

Kitrina is an award winning researcher whose work spans the arts, humanities and social sciences. Since her first degree (a BSc (Hons) in Exercise & Sport Sciences from the University of Exeter, Kitrina has developed a passion for making research accessible to lay and public audiences, and to work in ways that challenge stigma and discrimination - especially in areas surrounding mental health and illness. As such her work is published as films, documentaries, poems, songs, stories and musical theatre, along with written publications in traditional academic peer reviewed journals and news media.

With David Carless she is co-author of 'Sport and Physical Activity for Mental Health' and 'Life story research in sport: A narrative approach to understanding the experiences of elite and professional athletes' (Routledge) and they are in the process of finishing their third academic book (due 2020) Doing Arts Based Research, to be published by Routledge.

Since completing her doctorate at the University of Bristol in 2004 Kitrina has carried out research for a variety of agencies including the Department of Health, NHS Trusts, UK Sport, the Women’s Sport & Fitness Foundation and the Addiction Recovery Agency and at Leeds Beckett University for the Royal British Legion and the Youth Hostel Association. In 2014 Kitrina won Research of the Year and in 2019 the award for innovation and enterprise. She has a visiting Professorship from the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

Before entering academia Kitrina played elite and professional golf. She was British Champion, Scottish Girls Champion and played both for England and GB before turning professional and breaking the first of many records by winning her first event on the European tour. Among her twelve tour victories she was twice winning the European Masters Champion, the coveted Hennessy Cognac Trophy and she was English Open Champion. She was a member of the first winning European Solheim Cup team. She spent a decade working in television and radio, first with Radio Five live outside broadcasting and then presenting a weekly programme in Paris for Eurosport before taking up an academic appointment.

  • Research degree supervision

    Principal Supervisor

My expertise is in Narrative enquiry, Performative and Arts-Based Methodologies, and Autoethnography and I have a strong leaning to research that includes reflexivity, an awareness of the  researcher and takes on board as an ethical aim that we share findings with participants and the public.

Broadly speaking most of the research I supervise has mental health, identity or arts based methodologies running through them in some way, though having said that the populations I wave worked with are extremely (at least on the surface) varies from women in rural areas, to combat soldiers with PTS, and from inner city housing schemes .to dance... perhaps also running through these studies is an interest in social justice and attempting to understand issues and experiences that are difficult or impossible to narrative, or lives and stories that have been silences, delegitimized or devalued.

If you would like to get in touch with me to talk through your ideas for a Masters, Mphil, Prof Doc or PhD I'd be delighted to talk with you
