Sam McNab
Having initially trained as an Army Combat Medical Technician (CMT) in 2016, I started my career in a military setting, whilst trying to gain civilian healthcare experience. Moving from Scotland to London in 2018, I joined London Ambulance Service as an Emergency Medical Technician, two years later, I studied at the University of Cumbria to complete my DipHE in Paramedic Practice in 2021.
I continued to develop my clinical experience in various military courses such as Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) Medic, Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support (BATLS) and Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB), to later become a member of the clinical faculty on those courses.
As I began to push into the education space, I became a Phase 1 Instructor for British Army recruits and became a qualified coach and mentor. I also worked alongside Army Headquarters, providing independent reporting of lived experiences of soldiers and officers across the British Army as a Climate Assessor.
I joined the University of West London as a Lecturer in Simulation & Immersive Technologies in April 2023. Since joining UWL I have worked as Module Leader for the BNursing (Hons) Nursing Practice, Drug Calculations and Practice Hours modules across all 3 years of the specialism specific courses run at UWL. I am currently also in the process of completing my PgCert in Professional Academic Practice to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I have a strong interest in high-fidelity based simulation, pre-hospital trauma care and end of life care alongside non-medical interests such as IT, digital technologies and generative AI.
