Serena Braida works in voice, text and performance, with a focus on the materiality of language and on reading aloud as editorial and generative practice.

She holds an MFA in Voice Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and an MA in Cultural and Critical Studies from Birkbeck. Serena has given solo and collaborative performances internationally, most notably at Bold Tendencies, Christie's Lates, London Contemporary Music Festival and the Bucharest International Poetry Festival, among others. She is the author of a poetry pamphlet, Blue Sheila (Dancing Girl Press, 2018), and has published poetry and prose in magazines, journals and anthologies.

Research interests include poetry performance, poetics of breathing, the politics of speech and direct address, affect theory and interdisciplinary writing practices.

Before joining UWL, she was Associate Lecturer at the University of Northampton and Goldsmiths University of London, and Visiting Lecturer at St Mary's University, Twickenham and at the Academy of Dramatic Art (ADA), Zagreb, Croatia.

Teaching

Serena's teaching practice is steeped in radical pedagogies, combining embodied understanding and critical skills with special attention to neurodiversity, cultural identity and mental health.
