Become an Outreach Student Ambassador

The Role

The Outreach Team are looking for current UWL students from all backgrounds to act as role models to learners from under-represented backgrounds in higher education. As an Outreach Student Ambassador you would work on a variety of activities both on- and off-campus.

A lot of the learners our team engages with have perhaps never considered going to university, have no one in their life they can speak to about it, and have never set foot inside a university. Speaking to someone who went to the same school as them, has a similar background or has overcome some of the challenges they are facing, can be the difference between choosing to remain in the same place, and following their dreams. As an Outreach Student Ambassador you play a vital part in this process as a role model.

There are many benefits to becoming a Student Ambassador, it can even change what you want to do for a career! Aside from getting paid, you will develop a range of transferrable skills which are highly useful outside of your Student Ambassador role too,

  • Public speaking - giving campus tours or delivering talks in school
  • Initiative - thinking up ways to involve everyone in your group during workshops
  • Resilience – dealing with challenging behaviour
  • Leadership – taking charge of your group or leading a workshop
  • Empathy – working with learners who have had challenging lives, and helping them make the right choices to achieve their aspirations

We welcome applications from all current UWL students, particularly mature students (those who started their undergraduate course aged 21 or above) as we try to ensure our Student Ambassadors are representative of both our student body, and the learners we are working with.

All Outreach Student Ambassadors are DBS checked by the University before they begin working with learners. The Outreach team will help you through the DBS process.

Important: if you wish to become an Outreach Student Ambassador you must be accepted on to the Student Ambassador Scheme run by the Events Team, details here. From there you will be contacted by the Outreach Team about becoming an Outreach Student Ambassador.

Student Ambassador recruitment takes place in September/October, look out for emails, posters and Student Ambassadors around campus with more details.

If you would like some more information please email the Outreach Team at outreachteam@uwl.ac.uk.
