Overview

The UK is seeing an explosion of diabetes, linked to growing obesity rates.

This credit-bearing course, which is taught at our Reading and West London campuses, aims to enable healthcare professionals to gain knowledge and skills in:

  • Prevention, early detection and screening in diabetes
  • Clinical presentation and management in diabetes (including diabetic ketoacidosis)
  • Self-management in diabetes
  • Insulin management
  • Diabetes and obesity
  • Importance of interprofessional working to enhance health outcomes and patient experience.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level).

Cost and funding: This cost covers the full course fee.

  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £900
  • Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC

Credits: 20

Assessment method: OSCE 40% and Case Presentation 60%

Study dates and times

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

Study days are from 9am to 4pm.

The course will focus on:

  • Epidemiology of diabetes mellitus and anatomy
  • Physiology and disordered physiology
  • Pharmacology of type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Investigations (screening tools), diagnosis and management of diabetes
  • Blood glucose monitoring and insulin therapy and management
  • Management of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • NICE guidelines, local guidelines
  • National service frameworks for diabetes and its implementation
  • Complications of diabetes and their prevention, including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, eye disease, sexual health
  • Wound management and the diabetic foot
  • Psychological and socio-cultural issues in diabetes
  • Health promotion in diabetes including behaviour change and motivational interviewing
  • Self-management and family members/carers support in the delivery of diabetes care
  • Medical nutrition therapy and physical activity
  • Diabetes across the lifespan (children/young people, in pregnancy, elderly)
  • Impact of obesity and strategies to prevent the onset of diabetes
  • Future trends in diabetes management - new and advanced therapies
  • Inter-professional collaboration in diabetes management and the expert patient's perspectives of diabetes
  • New and advanced therapies in diabetes.

This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards one of the new and exciting courses below:

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (badged awards available eg Diabetes)
  • PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (first module in pathway can be studied at L6 - maximum of 20 credits) - badged awards available eg Acute Care/Out of Hospital Care.
