Overview

This clinically-based Foundation General Practice Nurse course aims to enable and support a transition into working in a general practice setting.

Delivered at our West London Campus it is ideal for newly employed or registered nurses looking to transition into general practice.

The course covers the requisite knowledge, theory and evidence base relating to general practice healthcare and will develop your healthcare knowledge and clinical skills to deliver clinically effective and compassionate care for patients within a general practice setting.

Primary care is constantly evolving requiring extension of roles for new appointees working in general practice.

Course requirements: 

  • evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level) 
  • you will currently be working within a general practice setting or in an area which allows flexibility for you to attend a general practice one day per week to be mentored by an experienced Practice Nurse. 

Cost and funding: Covered by NHS England (subject to availability)

Credits: 40 

Assessment method: 

  • Written case study 100% 
  • Practice assessment competencies and portfolio (pass/fail).

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

Study days are from 9am to 5pm.

The course is aimed at healthcare professionals who wish to work in the general practice setting and will therefore focus on general practice and the competencies required to work in this setting. 

You will learn skills that are unique to general practice such as: 

  • introduction/overview of General Practice/consultation skills and autonomous practice.
  • cervical cytology theory.
  • cervical cytology practical workshop.
  • infection control/wound management/and emergencies in general practice.
  • foundation immunisations
  • CHD/hypertension/and anticoagulation.
  • asthma/COPD.
  • women's health/contraception/and sexual health.
  • diabetes/CKD/care plans/ and mental health.

This course will equip you with the knowledge to empower the patient to manage their long-term condition, using national guidelines and quality outcome frameworks to guide practice.

Practical skill workshops will be delivered face-to-face but there will also be an expectation that you undertake some independent study to imbed your learning and apply it to your practice.

Each area of practice will be explored offering you knowledge and understanding, reflecting the latest National Guidance.  

You will need to identify a practice assessor who is an experienced General Practice nurse (GPN),  as much of the learning will take place in your own workplace. The practice assessor will support the you in your development of practice competencies.

UWL will work with the Training Hubs to find a suitable placement for those currently not employed in general practice where the student can be assessed and mentored by an experienced GPN.

I am currently seconded to UWL from clinical practice two days per week. I facilitate and teach on the Foundation Practice Nurse course. I work one day per week in family planning and sexual health and have my FSRH Diploma and am a specialist family planning nurse. Part of my role has been to deliver the Cervical Cytology course and I have been providing this training for the past eight years at UWL.

I am currently seconded to UWL from clinical practice two days per week. I facilitate and teach on the Foundation Practice Nurse course. I work one day per week in family planning and sexual health and have my FSRH Diploma and am a specialist family planning nurse. This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards the:

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (badged awards available eg Acute Care)
  • PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (first module in pathway can be studied at Level 6 - maximum of 20 credits) - badged awards available.
