Clearing 2017: 'Don’t fear Clearing, it’s a chance to follow your dream’ – student vlog
Clearing is a great way to find the right university course for you, says second year Music Performance student Miranda Bennett, who insists there’s no need to feel anxious about it.
In her vlog, Miranda reveals she was worried about Clearing after deciding to quit her course at another university. But the university makes the process as simple as possible, meaning she didn’t have to worry about pursuing her dream by enrolling at UWL’s London College of Music.
A-Level results are out this week (Thursday 17 August) and the University of West London (UWL) has a wealth of courses available via Clearing. The university’s dedicated team understand the period around results day is busy, exciting – and potentially stressful – for learners.
Speaking about her personal experience, Miranda says: ‘Obviously beforehand I was extremely nervous about Clearing. I didn’t know whether they would be accept me – did I have the right grades?
‘My advice is don’t be hard on yourself just because you’re coming through Clearing. I think that’s a big stigma for people in the position I was. But the university won’t think less of you for coming through Clearing: they don’t have any favouritism, stigma or prejudice. They’re extremely helpful.
‘Just think of Clearing as another chance to achieve your goals. Don’t be scared to ask lots of questions and if you have the opportunity to speak to a lecturer, that’s the best chance to find out first-hand what your degree is going to be like, rather than just looking through a prospectus.’
Miranda studies BMus Music Performance and selected it after getting the opportunity to speak with a senior lecturer on the course.
She said: ‘I was able to speak with a senior lecturer actually on the course and he was very nice and went through all the options in detail, even explaining the performance opportunities available.
‘It was generally nice to have someone there who understood the nerves I was experiencing. He was able to give me a place there and then based upon my credentials, which saved me a lot of stress.’
