UWL’s new cybersecurity Centre up for industry award

A new research centre at the University of West London is nominated for a prestigious award for its work in creating a more safe society.

Despite opening its doors to students only six months ago, UWL’s Cybersecurity and Criminology Centre (CCC) has already attracted the attention of judges at a leading awards for the national cybersecurity sector.

SC Media – a major publisher in the industry - has shortlisted UWL’s unit in its Professional Training and Certification category at the SC Media Europe Awards 2018, after being impressed by the cutting-edge training and research opportunities for PhD students on UWL’s Doctorate Training Programme.  

The CCC comprises Professors Vladlena Benson and Karim Murji, who are the leadership team, Prof. Jonathan Loo, Dr Simon Harding and Prof. Graham Brooks. The award nomination illustrates the team – supported by UWL - is making an impact in the cybersecurity industry.

Vladlena Benson, who leads the Centre’s cybersecurity research branch, said: ‘It’s exciting that the Centre’s work is being recognised, so soon after being set up. This is thanks to the high-calibre research our team creates and our talented PhD students.

‘This centre is part of the strategic vision of UWL involved in cutting–edge research preparing it current and future students for employment in the cybersecurity industry. 

‘It has been a major effort by the University to develop this new dimension of research. Thank you to the Vice-Chancellor Executive for recognising this area of research as an institutional priority and supporting its development, which led to this nomination.’

The Cybersecurity & Criminology Centre team

The SC Awards mark the achievements of cybersecurity professionals who help protect people’s critical data from cyber-attacks and online criminal networks. Previous awards winners include I.T giants such as IBM and the major broadcaster, Sky.

The Awards take place at Grosvenor Square in central London, on 5 June.
