UWLSU scoops ‘Students' Union of the Year’
The University of West London Students’ Union (UWLSU) took home two National Union of Students Awards at the 2018 NUS Awards, which took place last night in Birmingham.
UWLSU won the ‘Students’ Union of the Year’ and ‘Participation Award’, becoming the first students’ union in London to win both in the history of the event.
The NUS Awards celebrate the hard work of millions of students and staff in hundreds of students’ unions across the United Kingdom, covering engagement, influence, campaigns and the contributions that they make – both to their universities and their local communities.
The NUS Awards are judged by an independent panel from across the UK, which noted how clear it was to see the pride UWLSU has in its values. These include the importance of partnership, reaching out to students, and putting in place activities that contribute towards building a sustainable future for its students.
The judges commented on the highly diverse nature of UWLSU’s work and noted the sector-leading projects, which are now being recognised throughout higher education.
'Incredible work of UWLSU has been recognised'
Tye McMahon, CEO of UWLSU, said:
We are delighted to have been recognised by our National Union of Students. UWLSU has been on an inspiring journey over the past six years, and to be recognised with this award by the National Union of Students further reinforces our position as a sector-leading organisation.
Our membership is at the heart of our mission and our partnership with the University of West London allows us both to flourish and become the most engaging and inspiring students’ union in the UK. Every day our team work so hard to help deliver a truly transformational learning experience for UWL Students.
Welcoming the great news, Professor Peter John, Vice-Chancellor, UWL said:
We are delighted that the incredible work of UWLSU has been recognised by the National Union of Students with this well deserved award. Here at the University of West London, we place students at the centre of everything we do and our partnership with the Students’ Union, is key to achieving this.
It ensures we are a student focused organisation delivering the best possible experience and environment in which our students can learn, develop and thrive. We are proud to have been a part of this journey with UWLSU and look forward to its continued success.
It has been a fantastic week for the University of West London. Along with the two UWLSU awards, the latest figures published today by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), confirm that 98% of UWL graduates are in employment or further study within six months of graduating.
This is a record high for UWL, making it the top modern University in London for the HESA graduate employment indicator.
