Accompanying Councillor Brett were Strategic Director of Economy and Sustainability Peter George, Assistant Director of Economic Growth, Conor McDonagh, Adult Learning Manager Cristi Gonzalez and Employment and Apprenticeship Manager, Naseem Kauser.

The delegation received a presentation from UWL’s Westmont Hub team on generating innovative business start-ups in Ealing from Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business Development) Dr Suresh Gamlath. The Dean of London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism (LGCHT) and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor James Edmunds also talked about the leading role that the College plays in food innovation, upcycling and aviation.

UWL’s Head of Knowledge Exchange and Business Engagement, John Charlton, discussed the range of research expertise, cutting-edge facilities and specialist skills that the University provides businesses to ensure their growth and competitiveness.

The delegation also toured The West London Food Innovation Centre, UWL’s 737 flight simulator FlightPad, and concluded with a visit to The Heathrow Exhibition, a permanent and free archive exhibition at UWL showing how West London’s iconic airport became the UK’s hub for aviation.

Commenting on the visit, Dr Gamlath said:

It was a pleasure to welcome Councillor Brett and her delegation to UWL and to discuss the strategic role of the University in supporting sustainability, community and business in Ealing and west London through enterprise, education and innovation.”

Councillor Louise Brett said:

It was great to meet with the team at UWL and hear about some of the great work that the University is doing to support the council in its goals to fight inequality, create good jobs and tackle the climate crisis. I look forward to the year ahead as we explore further opportunities for close partnership working between the council and UWL to continue to grow and support the thriving small business community in our borough.”

Ealing Council’s visit builds on the success of the Start-up Enterprise Support for Women initiative – recently launched by UWL and Ealing Council – to help women entrepreneurs in Ealing, especially those from excluded groups, turn their business dreams into reality.
