Improvements and upgrades: making UWL better together

Intro

As many of us get ready to enjoy the winter break, UWL’s Property Services and IT departments are getting busy behind the scenes to ensure UWL facilities and IT will be even better in 2024.

Article body

Property Services is overseeing improvements across UWL’s sites. Bigger projects include the installation of new automated doors in the Street at St Mary’s Road to maintain access and improve heating around the Student Services desk; upgrading the WCs infrastructure at Lady Byron and painting high traffic areas such as the Lady Byron stairwell and Lammas.

Other projects include painting the Digital Futures Lab at Cavendish House, branding Student Services on the second floor of Paragon House and installing new soft furnishings near the Students’ Union desk at the main reception at Paragon House.

In addition, we will embark on a lift refurbishment programme at Paragon House next year. We will refurbish one lift at a time, to ensure minimum disruption and to keep the building accessible.

IT are currently upgrading software, internet connections and improving printing services. AppsAnywhere will be upgraded to version 3.0 which offers improved user interface and accessibility and integration with Blackboard.

Furthermore, an improved print solution is being launched across UWL campuses. This will allow students to access and print to University printers from their own devices. New high speed 10GB internet connections are also set to be rolled out in early 2024.

IT and Property Services are working together on comprehensive infrastructure changes across UWL. This includes a new wireless infrastructure at Paragon House that will provide a better Wi-Fi experience for students.

Additionally, a resilient uninterruptable power supply (UPS) will protect all the University’s IT infrastructure and Green IT services will ensure that all UWL-owned devices are managed as sustainably as possible.
