Special delivery: UWL degree apprentices enjoy landing air freight in the London Docklands

UWL apprenticeships help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career. Second-year degree apprentice students on our BSc (Hons) Express Delivery Manager course participated in a special morning at UWL’s FlightPad Boeing 737 simulator. The logisticians managed both landing times and air space for passengers and freight.

UWL Simulator Instructor Richard, who is a commercial pilot, gave the pre-flight briefing covering air traffic departure and arrival and the impact on timings for delivery. Students were also at the controls for landing or take-off procedures.
Express Delivery Manager student Ryan took to the seat for take-off, taking instructions from Richard, including to look out for the landmarks.
While this is only a simulation, students were interested to learn that flying below 2,000 feet over London is not allowed. Each of them got to experience for themselves the feel of flying an aircraft. They enjoyed amazing views, as the landmarks of London helped them navigate between Heathrow and City Airport. Taking a sharp right for a quick view of Windsor Castle or left over to Canary Wharf, but not that close, Express Delivery Manager student Dom landed the flight with impressive precision.
All the students engaged enthusiastically and attentively during the flight, with Richard asking the instructor: "Do you do all this all the time?"
"George flies it really," Richard replied.
Who’s George? The auto pilot, of course.
