Organised by the Chef’s Forum, the competition has an impressive judging panel that includes executive pastry chefs from top UK hotels and restaurants and features Channel 4’s Bake off: The Professionals judges Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin.

This is a very prestigious competition and Katrina is an excellent student,”

says Katrina’s mentor UWL Pastry and Confectionery Lecturer - Ben Christopherson.

She passed the prestigious Craft Guild of Chefs (CGC) Graduate Awards last year, so she has lots of skills and experience to help her meet the challenging brief.”

For the final, the students have four hours to produce a dessert of their own creation and plate up two portions, however there is a strict list of requirements to meet. To win, everything about the dish will need to be absolutely perfect, so Katrina is practising hard and will make her dish as many as six times ahead of competition day.

Ben adds that reaching the final of Pastry Chef of the Year is great for students’ careers.

Those who do well in this competition can basically choose where they want to work. Katrina is already working at a five-star hotel - Shangri-La The Shard in central London - so she’s doing very well.”

The best of luck to Katrina!
