University of West London degree show heads east as part of ARTSFEST

UWL final year BA (Hons) Photography and BSc (Hons) Visual Effects students from the London School of Film Media and Design (LSFMD) are having their work exhibited at the Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch. Titled 'Kaleidoscope', the degree show exhibition runs until 18 June. A diverse range of outstanding work is on display from 17 students including experimental environmental photography and VFX for a new feature film.

For her piece about Kent’s coastline at risk from rising sea levels titled Fading Away, Stefania Carli, BA (Hons) Photography, submerged her images in seawater from the actual geographic locations that feature in her work. The seawater literally erodes Stefania’s photographic images of the iconic cliffs of Dover, Ramsgate and Margate, reinforcing the fact that Kent’s coastline is at risk of being swallowed by the sea by 2100.
Stefania, originally from Venice, Italy, says,
I was inspired by the experimental processes of Los Angeles-based photographer Matthew Brandt. It took quite a few days to perfect the technique I used so that all the layers of ink erode in my photography.”
Fading Away is the largest photographic print ever to feature in a final year degree show exhibition, at 3.5 metres in length.
Peter Bennett, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Photography at LSFMD said,
It’s so important for our final year students’ work to be exhibited to the public and industry professionals at the degree show. It gives our students the opportunity to sell their work, build their industry network and pick up future jobs.”
Also having his work exhibited is BSc (Hons) Visual Effects student Rodrigo Rodrigues, a passionate advocate for indigenous cultures who is already making waves on the global film festival circuit. He made his first feature film Goitaca in 2020, a tribal adventure drama starring Leandro Firmino (City of God) which has won four awards including Best Director at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Rodrigo, originally from Brazil, chose to study Visual Effects at UWL to enhance his skills as a filmmaker. He has used his degree to complete visual effects, simulated boats and 3D environments for his second feature film Where There is Life There is Hope, which also stars Firmino.
Rodrigo says,
I have learned so much at UWL. It is such a good place to learn. My advice to students is that if you really want to work in the film industry and gain practical experience, come to UWL! I can now build anything with 3D software.”
Angus Luscombe, Course Leader for VFX at LSFMD says,
The visual effects student coursework on show at Espacio includes cutting-edge creative and technical projects with photorealistic computer-generated films made with 3D scans and the unreal engine. Our students are using industry standard NUKE software which will give them every chance to succeed in their careers.”
ARTSFEST is all about celebrating the incredible talents that have been nurtured at UWL’s two creative schools - the London College of Music and the London School of Film, Media and Design.
ARTSFEST showcases the inspiring work from graduating students and includes a whole range of online performances, exhibitions and special events.

Its first competition drew a huge response, with entry from Pietro Venier, who is studying for an MA in Directing at MetFilm School in Berlin which is a University of West London partner institution.
