Year one (Level 4)
Health and Safety
This module is designed to give the student an understanding and appreciation of the requirements of health and safety legislation and its implementation for civil and construction industry.
Structural mechanics is an essential core subject in all civil/ structural undergraduate programme of study. This module will lead to an understanding of the fundamental principles governing the analysis of structures; by analysing the forces and stresses that are induced in the elements of structures in their state of equilibrium.
Civil Engineering Construction
The module aims to give students a clear appreciation of the physical reality of civil and environmental engineering so that the designs and proposals that they make can be constructed as efficiently and safely as possible.
Civil Engineering Practice
This module is provided to develop the students' awareness of the administrative aspects of civil engineering projects. The module explains the basic principles of contract documents, tendering and other quasi-legal aspects of civil engineering.
This module is intended to provide an overview and study of the principal materials used within the construction industry. The focus is on the selection of the most appropriate materials through the study of the engineering performance characteristics, the human comfort properties and the sustainability considerations of those materials.
Land Surveying for Civil Engineers
Land surveying gives students the opportunity to develop theoretical and practical experience on land surveying exercises. Regular fieldwork practice in this module will enable students to produce a portfolio of land surveying work that will demonstrate their skills and personal development towards a completed knowledge on working with land surveying equipment such as levels theodolites total stations and other land surveying equipment.
CAD for Civil Engineers
This module is intended to give civil engineers and other interested students an appreciation of the growing importance of two and three-dimensional CAD software. It will give hands-on training in some of the most up to date software complying with the latest British and European Standards. Intelligent object orientated design methods will be employed to create virtual models. Students will gain an appreciation of the substantial benefits such systems can offer in terms of analysis, client visualisation and design flexibility.
Mathematics for Civil Engineers (Part 1)
This module provides a mathematical background for the undergraduate study of engineering. It includes the study of algebraic and trigonometric principles including matrix algebra, essential principles and applications of differential calculus and the use of associated functions, application of mathematics to engineering problems of vectors and statistics.
Mathematics for Civil Engineers (Part 2)
This module provides the mathematical background for the undergraduate study of engineering. It includes the topics of Integration including integration using standard forms, integration by substitution, integration using partial fractions, integration by parts. The method of separation of variables will be used to solve first order differential equations.
Different applications of calculus in areas such as maxima and minima, velocity and acceleration, centroids, volumes and solids of revolution, root mean square and average values will also be examined. An introduction to statistics and probability will follow. Specifically, this will include studies of measures of central tendency, mean, median and mode, measures of dispersion (standard deviation and variance), variables and graphs, elementary probability theory, binomial and normal distribution, elementary sampling theory and curve fitting.
Year two (Level 5)
Fluid mechanics is the branch of physics which involves the study of fluids (liquids, gasses) and the forces on them. Fluid mechanics can be divided into fluid statics, the study of fluids at rest; and fluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion. It is a branch of continuum mechanics. Fluid mechanics, especially fluid dynamics, is an active field of research, with many problems that are partly solved, related to civil and environmental engineering.
Design of Structural Elements
This module consolidates and extends the understanding of the concepts of structural mechanics to the design of structural elements in reinforced concrete. This is achieved by developing an understanding of the relevant Euro codes and their application in design.
The module enables students to gain knowledge and understanding of traffic control systems and analysis, design and evaluation processes for roads and road junctions. The aim of this module is also for students to achieve a thorough knowledge and understanding of highway engineering principles and practice.
This module gives you an appreciation of the significance and influence of past geological history on the formation and behaviour of soils. It also enhances your understanding of the engineering properties and behaviour of soil as an engineering material.
Soil mechanics gives a basic understanding of the soil engineering and behaviour of soil as an engineering material. It also gives knowledge of the basic soil mechanics tests by way of practical laboratory work. It covers basic concepts and theories of soil mechanics (e.g. consolidation, bearing capacity and seepage) and associated experimental tests in the lab.
This module is designed to enable students to investigate and examine the various material and structural properties, along with human comfort factors. This will be completed in a series of experiments which the students undertake.
Design of Steel and Masonry Structures
This module consolidates and extends the understanding of the concepts of structural mechanics to the design of steel and masonry structures. This is achieved by developing an understanding of the relevant Euro codes and their application in design.
Sustainable Civil Engineering
Sustainability in civil engineering projects has not in the past been a major consideration – it is now a key objective. This module outlines civil engineering projects when designed and built in response to sustainability objectives.
Year 3 (Level 6)
This module is designed to enable students to study and analyse the commercial factors that apply to project delivery and the maintenance of buildings.
Final Year Project
This module is designed to provide students with the chance to investigate an area of civil and built environment which is directly related to their course. This will enable the student to develop research and written communication skills while they gain a greater understanding of the industry.
Environmental Protection Engineering
The module aims to stimulate students to critically analyse the existing areas of environmental protection by extending on fluid mechanics knowledge.
This module helps the student analyse the various parameters involved in designing soil structures and evaluate the interaction of soils with structures placed in or on soils. The module introduces the use of Eurocode 7 for basic geotechnical design.
Structural Design Project
Structural Design Project provides practical application for the analysis and design knowledge which are gained in the first and second year of civil engineering.
112 - 120 UCAS tariff points from Level 3 qualifications.
These can include:
- A Levels at grade B, B and C, or above
- BTEC Extended Diploma with Distinction, Merit, Merit
- Access to HE Diploma
You also need GCSE English and Maths (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C) or Level 2 equivalents.
This course particularly welcomes applicants with the following qualifications: - Progression or Advanced Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment - Courses in a related subject area such as National Certificate/Diploma in Construction/Civil Engineering/Engineering
Mature applicants (aged 21+): If you do not hold the above qualifications but possess relevant work experience, you are invited to apply. Your application will be considered on an individual basis.
Level 5 entry
If you wish to enter directly at level 5 of this course you will be required to follow procedures in accordance with the university regulations. The demonstration of appropriate knowledge, competencies and relevant industrial experience is required and will be considered by the relevant university board. You are an ideal candidate for entry at this level if you have a 120 undergraduate credits at level 4 or a CertHE in a related subject area.
Level 6 entry
If you wish to enter directly at level 6 of this course you will be required to follow procedures in accordance with the university regulations. The demonstration of appropriate knowledge, competencies and relevant industrial experience is required and will be considered by the relevant university board. You are an ideal candidate for entry at this level if you have a 240 undergraduate credits (at level 4 and 5), a DipHE, Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject area.
International entry criteria
International students need to meet our English language requirement at IELTS 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
