UWL Students Celebrate the Windrush Generation

In honour of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush, UWL will be hosting the Descendants, a youth arts education organisation focused on fostering awareness of African and Caribbean cultures and traditions. The Descendants will be putting on an afternoon of celebration and reflection during its Windrush70 Tea Party at our main Ealing campus.

London School of Film, Media & Design

  • Advertising & PR third years working as the agency for event promotion
  • Broadcast Journalism students conducting live reporting from the event

London Geller College of Hospitality & Tourism

  • Tasty Caribbean-themed treats on the day

Third-year BA (Hons) Advertising & Public Relations students handled promotions for the event, and also did additional creative work for the non-profit arts organisation. Alex Gyorgy contributed the winning design for the event’s promotional poster. Ellis Curran, Jose Castro, and Kristin Heron contributed a strapline that the Descendants plan to use across their communications, with Milan Aszalai, Elena Dican, and Nikola Verespejova also creating work that the non-profit plans to use long-term.

Mariana Rocha, Volunteering Service Manager for the University of West London, stated, 'We’re thrilled to get so many students involved in supporting a wonderful organization like the Descendants. Moreover, helping people both celebrate and understand Windrush is a part of UWL’s mission to offer education to our wider community.'

Reflecting on the student participation in this worthwhile project, Kristin Brewe, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Advertising & PR, added, 'Working on a live project for our volunteering team and a wonderful organisation like the Descendants gives students from all courses who participate valuable real world experience while reinforcing the importance of giving back. UWL is definitely the careers university, but we’re also the careers university that cares.'
