Whether you are a player, a fan, or a business, the UK esports market is a vibrant and growing industry and this is the ideal time to get involved.

The scope of esports has gone beyond playing one-on-one gaming with friends in the same space. It’s now a billion-dollar industry where strangers across the globe can team up to compete in multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, first-person shooter (FPS) games, battle royales, and real-time strategy titles.

In this esports degree, you'll acquire essential academic competencies and key industry skills vital for success in the esports sector. You will also gain insights into the societal impact of events, setting the stage for a holistic understanding of the esports landscape.

To equip you with practical insights and knowledge crucial for navigating the rapidly evolving esports industry, you will explore important areas such as:

  • Approaches to Personal and Professional Development

    The aim of this module is to give you the academic skills necessary for the course as well as develop your employability and graduate skills. The module will focus on comprehending and applying effective academic competencies whilst also addressing the key areas required for future employability within the esports industry. 

  • Introduction to Budgeting and Finance for Esports Management

    The aim of this module is to equip you with a foundational understanding of financial principles and practices essential for effective management within the esports industry. 

    Through a comprehensive exploration of budgeting techniques, revenue generation strategies, and financial decision-making processes specific to esports, the module seeks to empower you with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the dynamic financial landscape of esports organisations. 

    By focusing on practical applications and industry-specific scenarios, the module aims to foster financial literacy and competence, preparing you for future roles where budgeting and financial acumen are integral to successful esports management. 

  • Introduction to Esports Management

    This module serves as an introductory exploration into the fundamental principles of esports management, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of the industry. 

    Through a combination of theoretical frameworks and practical applications, you will gain insights into the key components that contribute to successful esports management. This module sets the stage for deeper exploration in subsequent levels, providing you with a solid foundation in esports management and preparing you for more advanced topics in the field.

  • Event, Culture and Society

    The module aims to explore the social and cultural significance of events in society. You will gain knowledge of established theories drawn from sociology, anthropology, consumer culture and cultural studies, and apply these in an events context. 

    Through the application of these theories to an event context, you will develop skills of critical thinking, evaluation and analysis. Both written and oral communication skills will be developed through the presentation of ideas, and the development of a professional trade magazine article.

  • Media and Esports

    This module provides you with a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between media and esports. 

    Through theoretical discussions and practical applications, you will develop a nuanced understanding of the role media plays in shaping, promoting, and broadcasting esports content.

  • Esports in Context

    This module offers a multidimensional exploration of esports within diverse contexts, examining its cultural, social, and economic dimensions. You will analyse the intersection of esports with broader societal frameworks, fostering a critical understanding of its implications.

  • Digital Marketing and Consumer Behaviour

    You will be introduced to the dynamic and changing world of digital marketing and communications. The importance of creating and sustaining internal and external digital communications as well as delivering the online customer experience are explored. This module aims to offer you an overall perspective of the aspects of consumer behaviour in a digital age. 

  • Applied Research Methods

    The module aims to provide you with broad knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of research. It focuses on the use of a range of different research methods and approaches. The module encompasses the understanding and application of appropriate research methodologies, research approaches, research designs, forms of data collection, research statistics and report writing and presentation.

  • Esports Events - Production and Delivery

    The module aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts, techniques, and skills involved in the production and delivery of esports events. Emphasising practical application and theoretical foundations, you will explore the dynamic landscape of esports production, gaining insights into the technical, logistical, and creative aspects of executing successful events. 

    This module delves into the intricacies of esports event production, covering essential elements from planning and execution to post-event analysis. You will engage with industry-relevant technologies, explore event logistics, and develop critical thinking skills to navigate the challenges inherent in the esports production domain.

  • Talent Management and Leadership

    This module explores talent management, which has become an area of significant importance in international HR practice, as retaining excellent employees plays an important role in the strategic competitiveness of an organisation. This is never so important than in today's ever-changing work environment, where businesses operate in an environment of not only risk but also volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA).

    The module will develop your understanding of the requirements for entrepreneurial leadership, which is essential in enabling the dynamic capabilities of the organisation. This module aims to develop your understanding of the requirements for successful leadership and talent management in an ever-changing world.

  • Risk Management, Ethics and Regulations for Esports

    This module aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of risk management, ethical considerations, and regulatory frameworks within the context of the esports industry. You will explore the unique challenges associated with esports and develop the skills necessary for effective risk mitigation, ethical decision-making, and compliance with relevant regulations. 

    The module equips you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex landscape of risk, ethics, and regulations in the esports industry. Through theoretical exploration and practical applications, you will gain insights into the importance of responsible management in the fast-evolving world of esports.

  • Managing Esports Arenas

    This module aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of risk management, ethical considerations, and regulatory frameworks within the context of the esports industry. You will explore the unique challenges associated with esports and develop the skills necessary for effective risk mitigation, ethical decision-making, and compliance with relevant regulations. 

    It equips you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex landscape of risk, ethics, and regulations in the esports industry. Through theoretical exploration and practical applications, you will gain insights into the importance of responsible management in the fast-evolving world of esports.

Compulsory modules

  • Dissertation

    You will initially produce a proposal report of their research idea and complete a set of research ethics forms in accordance with the University’s research ethics policy. Thereafter, you will work towards completing the research project with advice and guidance from the academic team. The project culminates in the submission of a capstone thesis which incorporates a thorough critical review of the literature, a detailed methodology outlining relevance and limitations, a critical analysis and discussion of the results and the critical evaluation of the outcomes of the work.

  • Strategic Management and Data Analytics for Esports Organisations

    This module explores the synergies between strategic management and data analytics. You will delve into strategic decision-making, leveraging data analytics to inform and enhance strategies in the dynamic esports industry. The module will equip you with advanced skills in strategic management and data analytics tailored to the esports sector, enabling you to make informed decisions, drive competitive advantage, and optimise organisational performance.

  • Managing the Esports Spectator Experience

    The module aims to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of managing the esports spectator journey and enable you to proficiently plan, execute, and assess the esports spectator experience, integrating event production principles with considerations for audience wellbeing. This module focuses on honing strategic skills in orchestrating immersive esports spectator experiences. You will explore the intricacies of event production in esports, emphasising audience engagement, and wellbeing. 

  • Esports, Agency, Promotion and Consultancy

    This module focuses on the integration of esports, event production, and management with a specific emphasis on agency, promotion, and consultancy aspects. You will explore the roles of agencies, promotion strategies, and consultancy practices within the esports industry. The module aims to equip you with advanced knowledge and practical skills in managing esports events, promoting esports initiatives, and providing consultancy services within the dynamic field of esports. 

  • Contemporary Issues in Esports Management

    The module aims to equip you with advanced knowledge and critical thinking skills to navigate and contribute to the rapidly evolving landscape of esports, integrating perspectives from event production and nutrition and wellbeing. You will critically analyse emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in the esports industry, fostering a deep understanding of contemporary issues shaping the field.

112 UCAS points required from level 3 qualifications

These can include:

  • A Levels at grade B, B and C, or above
  • BTEC Extended Diploma with Distinction, Merit, Merit
  • Access to HE Diploma
  • T Levels

You also need GCSE English and Maths (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C) or Level 2 equivalents.

 

Candidates without formal academic qualifications will also be considered where they have relevant work experience in accordance with the University’s policy for Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning. 

No hands-on computing/gaming experience is required.

Mature applicants (aged 21+): If you do not hold the qualifications listed but have relevant work experience, you are welcome to apply. Your application will be considered on an individual basis.

Level 5 (year 2) entry
To directly enter the second year of this course you will need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 120 undergraduate credits at Level 4 or a CertHE in a related subject area.

Level 6 (year 3) entry
To directly enter the third year of this course you need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 240 undergraduate credits (at Levels 4 and 5), a DipHE, Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject area.

6.0 IELTS or above

You need to meet our English language requirement - a minimum of IELTS 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Visit our English language requirements page for information on other English language tests we accept. 

You also need academic qualifications at the same level as UK applicants. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Check for local equivalents
