UWL professor publishes funded research into the rapid development of autonomous vehicles
Intro
Alison Wakefield, Professor of Criminology and Security Studies at University of West London, and Ishmael Bhila and Professor Peter Lee from the University of Portsmouth have published a report entitled "Autonomous Vehicles: Threats, Risks and Opportunities".
Article body
Their research on the threats, risks, challenges and opportunities posed by autonomous vehicles (AVs) within security operations was funded by the ASIS Foundation, which helps security professionals with certification scholarships, practical research and grants.
The report examines AVs that operate in the air, on land, on water and underwater. It explores how they have been used, what potential they have and how they have evolved. The research discusses how artificial intelligence is affecting their capability, what regulations are currently in place around the world and what direction future these may take.
We’ve witnessed the evolution of autonomous vehicle technology since the 1990s,”
explains Alison, the principal researcher.
While these advances hold immense potential across various sectors, including commercial, military and security, they also bring a myriad of risks and challenges. Our report aims to provide security practitioners with valuable insights and recommendations to navigate this complex landscape effectively.”
ASIS Foundation Chair Martin Gill says:
Ishmael Bhila, Peter Lee, and Alison Wakefield’s research is a testament to their dedication to understanding the complexities of AV technologies within security applications."
Their findings provide invaluable guidance for security practitioners seeking to harness the transformative potential of AVs while safeguarding against potential risks.”
