Civil and Environmental Engineering MSc
Overview
Our civil and environmental engineering course is designed to give you a better understanding of the relationship between civil engineering and current environmental issues.
We will help you to advance your analytical skills in core subject areas, including structural analysis, sustainability, geotechnics and hydraulics. You will learn to use modern IT techniques to solve complex problems throughout this course.
This course has been designed in close consultation with industry and is accredited as a designated technical MSc degree by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). The JBM comprises the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers. This course is also accredited by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES), and successful completion satisfies the academic requirements for chartered status.
Professional accreditation
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the:
- Institution of Civil Engineers
- Institution of Structural Engineers
- Institute of Highway Engineers
- The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation
- the Permanent Way Institution
This degree meets the academic requirement for further learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, you must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Extended Masters and Enhanced Extended Masters options
If you have an undergraduate degree but do not meet the entry criteria for this course, you may qualify for our Extended Masters or Enhanced Extended Masters courses.
These courses feature four specially designed modules to improve your academic and English skills. Once completed, you can progress directly onto the regular Masters course. See below for more information.

Course detail & modules
In addition to studying key civil engineering disciplines at an advanced level, you will cover the broader aspects of project and process management as they relate to the sector.
There will be several opportunities to design solutions to civil engineering problems, both in groups and individually.
At the end of your course, your dissertation will allow you to conduct postgraduate-level research, this time on a particular area of civil and environmental engineering, structural engineering or construction management.
Throughout your studies, you will have access to a dedicated computing laboratory. In addition, the University library is rich in resources that support the academic and professional elements of this course.
You will also have access to a range of digital resources, including the specialist simulation packages ANSYS, ETABS, SAFE and LUSAS.
The School of Computing and Engineering is a research-based school and we pride ourselves on offering a supportive environment for our students. Your tutors and dissertation supervisor are experts in their respective fields and will do all they can to help you reach your potential.

Extended Masters and Enhanced Extended Masters options
Our Extended Masters and Enhanced Extended Masters courses are intended for students who already have an undergraduate degree but don't meet the entry requirements to study for a Masters degree.
Over a full-time semester, you will study four modules specially designed to improve your academic and English language skills:
- Advanced Study Skills
- Critical Thinking, Analysis and Evaluation
- Statistics
- English (Business English on the Enhanced course)
Once completed, you will progress directly onto the core Masters course.
What's the difference between an Extended Masters and an Enhanced Extended Masters? The Enhanced Extended Masters is similar to the Extended Masters but with a greater focus on improving your English skills. It also includes a Business English module which will allow you to gain a full understanding of this critical subject area.

Internship**
You can also take this course with a six-month internship with an employer during your studies. There are opportunities throughout the civil and construction industry within the UK. On the internship you will be able to improve existing skills and acquire new ones, explore various career opportunities, network and be part of a team. This will improve your understanding of the world of work and professional practice in the workplace. It will also enhance your career prospects, allowing you to focus on your potential career path.

If you choose a course with placement/internship route we would like to advise you that if a placement/internship opportunity does not arise when you are expected to undertake the placement then the University will automatically transfer you to the non-internship route. Entry requirements
You should have an honours degree (2:2 or above) in civil or structural engineering or another engineering qualification at an equivalent level.
We may also offer you a place based on a combination of an ordinary degree (e.g. BSc/BEng in engineering without honours) together with relevant experience from within the work environment.

Extended Masters Degree

- international students must meet our English language requirements at IELTS 6.0 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
Please note: If you qualify for a regular Masters, you will not be accepted on the Extended Masters or Enhanced Extended Masters course.
You need to meet our English language requirement - a minimum of IELTS 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Visit our English language requirements page for information on other English language tests we accept.
You also need Level 6 qualifications at the same level as UK applicants. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Check for local equivalents.
We offer pre-sessional English language courses if you do not meet these requirements.

Professor Ali Bahadori-Jahromi
Ali Bahadori-Jahromi is a Professor of Civil Engineering, course leader for undergraduate and postgraduate Civil and Environmental Engineering including the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, and head of the Building Performance and Climate Change research group. His research group produced several research outputs, a number of PhD graduates for the civil and built environment and attracted collaboration and research funding from leading companies and research centres including: The Hilton, The Concrete Centre, XP Solutions and The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Professor Jahromi is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) recognised by the Engineering Council. He is also a member of the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) which is the UK accreditation body for Civil Engineering courses and Chartered Examiner for the Institution of Civil Engineers.
