UWL celebrates kindness and generosity at the annual donors and scholars event
Intro
The Office of Development and Alumni Relations recently had the privilege of introducing our scholarship students to those generous individuals whose financial aid has made their education possible.

This academic year, UWL has given out 47 prizes and scholarships, all of which are backed by alumni and friends of the University. These scholarships help our students with everything from travel expenses, to rent, to buying necessary equipment like laptops or textbooks.
Over a delicious afternoon tea at Pillars restaurant, donors and scholars made connections, shared advice and gave thanks for a truly life-changing gift.
As well as the donors and scholars, the event was attended by Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter John CBE, Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Woodman, members of the Vice-Chancellors’ Executive and many of the Heads of Schools and Colleges.
In his welcoming speech, the Vice-Chancellor offered his heartfelt thanks to our donors.
We cannot overstate the impact you’ve had on our students. It is so heartening to see the support you have offered to our students, seeing them through this awful cost of living crisis. Every gift allows a student to achieve their goals here at the university and go on to a successful career.”
The reception was treated to a musical performance by Mona Blackman Scholarship recipient Joshua Fulcher, who played two pieces by fellow Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. Then Nilu Khan, Midwifery student and recipient of the Sandhu Charitable Foundation scholarship, told us how this has affected her life.
I never thought I would be able to pursue my degree, but now I am and everyone in my life is so proud of me. To my donors, your kindness and generosity have shown that there’s kindness still in humanity. You are my angels, and I hope you know how grateful I am."
Applications for donor-backed scholarships will re-open in August. Find out more on our undergraduate scholarships and bursaries page.
